Alice Through the Looking Glass is a fantasy adventure that takes viewers back to the magical world of Wonderland. In this story, Alice (Mia Wasikowska) finds herself in new challenges involving time travel to save her friends and restore harmony to the fantasy kingdom. One of the key roles, albeit a small one, in this world is played by Alan Rickman, who voices the wise and mysterious caterpillar Absolem.
At the beginning of the film, Alice returns to her normal life in London after a long journey. However, her heart yearns for adventure, and it is Absolem who becomes her guide back to the magical Wonderland. Absolem, now transformed into a butterfly, appears as a graceful but mysterious creature who helps Alice find her way through the Looking Glass, a portal to a new part of Wonderland.
While traveling through the Looking Glass, Alice discovers that her friend, the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp), has lost his former brilliance and is in despair over the disappearance of his family. To help the Hatter, Alice decides to use the Chronoglobe, a magical device that allows her to travel through time. However, this means she will have to face the powerful Chrono (Sacha Baron Cohen), the personification of time, who guards its course and warns Alice of the dangers of changing the past.
Absolem acts as a voice of wisdom, guiding Alice in her choices. Although he appears only occasionally, his words always carry deep meaning, and his characteristic calm tone, which Alan Rickman gave to Absolem, adds mystery and a sense of importance to the scenes. His final moments on screen leave a warm impression, as this was one of Rickman‘s last roles before his departure.
As Alice travels through time, she uncovers secrets from her friends’ pasts, learns about old conflicts between the White Queen (Anne Hathaway) and the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter), and finds a way to restore hope to the Hatter. Her actions remind her that true change comes not from changing the past, but from the strength to accept it and move on.
The film ends with Alice returning to her world, stronger and more confident, and Absolem symbolically leaving her with a sense of completion. Through the Looking Glass is a story about time, family, and the courage to make difficult decisions, and Rickman‘s Absolem becomes an unforgettable guide on this magical adventure.
