Alan Rickman made his television debut in 1978 as part of the ambitious BBC Television Shakespeare project, which aimed to adapt all of William Shakespeare’s plays. In the television film Romeo & Juliet, he portrayed Tybalt, Juliet’s hot-tempered cousin and Romeo’s main antagonist.

The role of Tybalt provided Rickman with a great opportunity to showcase his acting skills in the persona of an aristocratic yet menacing character. His performance was marked by intensity and a restrained sense of danger—qualities that later became defining traits of many of his on-screen villains.

Although the role was relatively small, it was an important step in Rickman’s career, opening doors to significant theatrical and television projects. This performance marked the beginning of his journey to worldwide fame, which he would achieve in the 1980s and 1990s.
