Character from the movie “An Awfully Big Adventure”.
In the movie “An Awfully Big Adventure” Alan Rickman creates an emotionally rich image of P.L. O’Hara, an actor of a theater troupe, whose tragic fate becomes a key element of the plot. O’Hara returns to his hometown to perform in a play, but behind this lies a personal drama: he is looking for traces of a lost love. His return has not only a professional, but also a deeply personal motive.
It is later revealed that O’Hara is the biological father of the main character, Stella, although he does not know this at first. Their relationship, full of tension and inexplicable attraction, takes on a tragic tone when the truth is revealed. This knowledge destroys his inner world and leads to a tragic ending: P.L. O’Hara commits suicide, unable to bear the pain of discovery and realization of his mistakes.
Rickman conveys this extremely complex character with great subtlety. His O’Hara is a man torn between the desire to reconcile with his past and the inability to overcome his own feelings of guilt. The actor imbues his character with a tragic dignity that evokes both sympathy and painful empathy.
