Plot
“Dogma” is a satirical comedy by Kevin Smith that explores themes of faith, religion, and morality. The story follows two fallen angels, Loki and Bartleby, who attempt to exploit a loophole in Christian doctrine to return to Heaven. If successful, their plan could unravel the fabric of the universe.
Alan Rickman plays Metatron, the voice of God, who appears to the protagonist, Bethany, to task her with saving existence. His sarcastic, no-nonsense demeanor adds humor to the film. Metatron aids Bethany in assembling an unusual team, including the prophets Jay and Silent Bob, to thwart the angels’ scheme and preserve cosmic balance.
The film culminates in a climactic battle between good and evil, where Metatron explains God’s will and restores order. While filled with comedic moments, “Dogma” delves deeply into questions of belief and accountability.
