Absolem

View in Ukrainian

Absolem is a character in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through The Looking Glass. Absolem is a caterpillar that appears in both the real world and Underland, however, he doesn’t speak in the real world.

Alan Rickman voiced this character and gave him a “face” shortly before his death (the film “Alice Through the Looking Glass”). In the film “Alice Through the Looking Glass”, a dedication to Alan Rickman appears before the credits and the caterpillar turns into a butterfly and flies into the sky.

Appearance

Alice in Wonderland

Absolem seems to be Underland’s oracle. When there is a problem or uncertainty, Absolem is who the characters in Underland go to for answers. He is the keeper of the Oraculum; a compendium of Wonderland’s history.

Absolem appears in the real world on two separate occasions. One is in caterpillar form when Alice is proposed to by Hamish. When Alice notices a caterpillar on Hamish’s shoulder, she, being the “gentle giant” she is (compared to Absolem), rescues Absolem by placing him on the gazebo. Later, when she stands on a ship bound for China, she sees him in butterfly form and she recognizes him by name.

Alice Through the Looking Glass

When Alice returns to London, she is followed by Absolem (in his Butterfly form) but doesnt notice him until he flies up to her and reminds her she is Alice. Absolem guides her to a looking glass inside of the Ascot manor. After passing through the looking glass and encountering the peculiarities within, Absolem appears to insult her and inform her she is needed once again. Before she leaves into Underland, he warns her to watch her step.

Absolem`s quotes:

I said you were not hardly Alice, but you’re much more like her now, infact you’re almost Alice.
